In the Cold, Dark Winter

The entire country is experiencing cold and snow, even in the Gulf coast region. My grandson in Beaumont, Texas, is practically in the Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans. He has bemoaned for many years the lack of snow in his region. Yesterday he had snow. My daughter-in-law posted pictures of him and the dogs romping in the five inches of frozen white stuff.

Snow covers over everything and makes it new. It creates brightness.

” In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:4-5 NIV

Do you know this song?

In the Bleak Midwinter

In the bleak midwinter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.

This first verse paints a dark, frozen picture. We feel alone and vulnerable in the cold dark night. The following verses tell about the birth of Jesus in that cold midwinter. The final verse states:

What can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man
I would do my part,
Yet what I can I give Him,
Give my heart.

The days are cold, the darkness stays long and starts early. Snow may come to relieve the bleakness. Kellan’s response to the snow was joy, pure, unadulterated joy. In the same way, Christ relieves the bleakness in our souls; He still shines. What’s our response to Him?
